I'll always stand up for Ranbir: Deepika

Friends? Foes? Estranged exes? Or reconciled friends? Phew. We're sure Deepika and Ranbir will keep surprising us with their constant war of words and wits!

But let's leave the spats behind for now, because it seems like the two are currently in a comfort zone with each other. Ranbir's recent argument with Ranveer Singh (at RK's much talked about bash) over Deepika made headlines. Apparently, Ranveer had made remarks about Ms. Dee, and it didn't go down too well with the Kapoor boy. When Deepika spoke exclusively to zoOm about this, at first she quickly said, "I wasn't there at the party so I don't know what happened." But when probed further she said, "Ranbir and I know each other very well and I know that I'll always stand up for Ranbir and he'll do the same for me". Hmnnn...we think with this confession, all the past outbursts in the media could be written off.

I wanted to play the fat guy: Aamir

Aamir Khan is currently shooting for his cop movie with Reema Kagti, but while he's at it, the superstar is leaving no stone unturned in convincing people about how good his latest production Delly Belly is.

The film stars Imran Khan, Kunal Roy Kapoor and Vir Das in lead roles and Aamir just can't stop raving about how fun and entertaining the film is. The actor even went on saying that he loved the script so much that he too wanted to be part of it.

Talking at a recent event, Aamir said, "I loved the script and especially the character played by Kunal (the sardar Nitin in the film). It's a total fun character and I thought it would be a great experience playing such a role. But then I decided against it."

Further explaining his reason for not doing the role in Delly Belly, Aamir said, "The character in the film had to be fat and sloppy. It meant that if I want to play Nitin, I would have to gain a lot of weight. I didn't want to gain weight and let go of a body I have worked hard to achieve."

Coming from someone who is known to change his looks as per the character demands, Aamir's reason seems quite unconvincing. We wonder if its way of promoting the film as a great product!

Ajay Devgn to host a TV show

With the likes of Amitabh Bachchan already onboard hosting the benchmark show Kaun Banega Crorepati and Salman Khan's Dus Ka Dumapparently in the pipeline, the channel is in a predicament to approve another project to be hosted by a male actor from B-Town.

Ajay Devgn, who has now set his eyes on television may bear the brunt of this decision. He has given his nod to a stunt-based reality show, tentatively titled as Hai Dum which was to be co-hosted by Priti Desai, (who featured in F.A.L.T.U.) but now it appears that the channel is not interested in the project. They would rather like to do a show with a female host. Informs a source, "Ajay has given his nod to the project. It is a very interesting concept, and it is not a copy of a show abroad. In fact, it will be launched in India and internationally at the same time. However, the channel decided to turn it down as they want some female-oriented reality show. Ajay was even ready to co-produce it. We have started pitching it to other broadcasters now." Seems like good things have to wait at times. The channel in question declined that they are even coming up with such a show with Devgn as the host. A source close to Ajay says, "He has no idea which channel has been approached. He is in talks with Vikay Amritraj, whose concept it is, and he is the one talking to different channels. Two channels have shown interest. However, right now talks are still in the very initial stages and so it is difficult to say much at this time."

B-town beauties at Cannes

A wash of white, a burst of coral, a dash of black and the sparkle of champagne marked the arrival of our Bollywood beauties at the 64th Cannes film festival.

The actresses outdid themselves with an interesting mix of styles that got the shutterbugs into a frenzy and the fashion police hard at work. From quiet and elegant lacy attire to breezy nets and flamboyant fabrics, the mood was playful enough for the sweet airs of the south of France and yet seriously put together for the most prestigious film festival that happens at this time of the year.

Sonam Kapoor outdid herself by opting for some classic touches for the red carpet. She went in for a Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2009 gown, in a structured silhouette and a fishnet overlay. It was a good idea to choose couture for the occasion, and being tall and svelte, she was able to carry off this dress with its fanned out derriere to perfection. This was teamed with white Ferragamo peep-toe heels, Chopard stud earrings and an Amrapali cocktail ring on her finger. For other occasions at the festival, she opted for clothes by other famous designers.

Aishwarya Rai, Bollywood diva and the country's beauty icon was in the news at first for her brown Lanvin halter, double breasted, sleeveless trench dress, which she wore for a photocall. She teamed the dress with a pair of black strappy sandals, a beautiful watch, some rings and a bangle bracelet. A lot of comparisons were drawn between her and Angelina Jolie, when both of them appeared in knee-length, belted dresses and minimal jewel pieces, with hair left loose and playing in the breeze.

But it was Ash's gorgeous red carpet attire that created waves in fashion circles. She wore an Armani Prive Spring 2011 gown in white and navy with glittering diamond studs, a chunky bracelet and a Ferragamo silver metal handbag to complete her look. Her hair was gelled and pulled into a messy updo right in the centre of her head. At the opening ceremony of the festival, she appeared in a gorgeous one shoulder gown from the spring haute couture collection by Elie Saab.

Another Bollywood actress Minissha Lamba, a first timer at the Cannes Film Festival, wore a nude Gauri and Nainika gown, with a fitted bodice, lacy detailing on the shoulder and a flowing skirt, accessorised with a box clutch. The champagne gown suited her perfectly and she took the minimalistic route by not accessorising much.

As for Mallika Sherawat, she wore a black couture gown by Eric Tibusch, a see-through ensemble that outlined her lingerie. She looked as fabulous as she usually does and seemed unperturbed by the excitement that her dress seemed to create. At another event, she wore an outfit in cool chiffon.

When it comes to fashion, Bollywood gals are choosing international couture for red carpet events, and in a unique way, managing to adopt the styles and make them their own.

Deepika's excited for 'Rana'

It's her first Tamil flick and Bollywood bombshell Deepika Padukone is thrilled that she's got an opportunity to star with none other than Superstar Rajinikanth.

"I will not even call this a dream come true because it seemed so impossible that I did not even dream that this would happen one day," she said at a press meet for Rana.

TOI understands that the actress is shooting a song sequence on the premises of a popular studio in Vadapalani. "Friday was my first day of shoot," she revealed, "We are shooting a song sequence to a number tuned by A R Rahman, the composer of the film." So, how will she look in the song? "It'll be a period look," she told us, "As the film is set in the 17th century, my look and hair will be done in a very different way. Costume designer Neeta Lulla, who has handled films like Devdas, has worked hard on my look and come out with brilliant results. It's a 17th century look with a south Indian touch."

Added the actress, "It's great to be in Chennai and shooting for this film. Even on the first day of shoot, I could feel the entire unit reaching out to me and helping me with the new environment. Ravikumar sir and Soundarya Rajinikanth ensured that I was comfortable. Even Rajini sir wished me success at the pooja. I'm eagerly awaiting to start work on the scenes that feature both of us."

Rajinikanth, in her opinion, is a legendary actor. "It can't get bigger and better than this. I'm south Indian myself and have long wanted to debut in Kollywood with a big film. Though I've been listening to scripts, it was when Rana came along that I decided that this is the one for me. I think it's destiny." Has she seen any of the Superstar's films? "I've only seen Robot till now."

Akshay to remake Tamil film 'Ko'?

According to an industry source, the actor plans to remake the recently released Tamil film 'KO' in Hindi.

Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn are not the only actors to keep watch on good South films; Akshay Kumar, too, has joined the bandwagon. The actor has started watching them quite often these days. It's believed that he is planning to remake a Tamil film 'Ko' in Hindi.

According to an industry insider, the actor attended a special screening of the recently released Tamil film 'KO' and was impressed by the story. It is believed that Akki spoke to director KV Anand and expressed his desire to buy the remake rights of the film.

The source adds that the actor also discussed about producing the remake under his banner. If that happens, Akshay will be seen in the role of a photojournalist, played by Jeeva in the original. Akshay is yet to decide his director though names like Priyadarshan and Anthony D'Souza being considered.

Apart from Jeeva, 'Ko' starred Karthika and Prakash Raaj in lead roles.

Nandita divulged my secrets for publicity: Om Puri

For someone whose repertoire of films comprises – Ardh Satya, Aakrosh, Bhumika, Gandhi and more recently — Patiala House and 3 Thay Bhai –Om Puri surprises us when he confesses that he does not enjoy the process of filmmaking any more!

"I was enjoying it till the 80s and early 90s. After 1995 the quality of films in Bollywood has suffered." In Ahmedabad for an international film festival, Puri says present day films revolve round characters one can't relate to. "In a country where 90 per cent of the population lives in villages, I don't understand how can films like Singh is Kinng, Patiala House and Tees Maar Khan be made? I don't understand how can you give away crores of money to an actor because he has achieved star status. Only in the Hindi film industry an actor is bigger than the film. And when a film flops, producer marta hai bechara."

Predominantly an arthouse cinema actor, Puri feels "meaningful" films still have their share of audience. "There is a lot of good cinema being churned out by Vishal Bhardwaj, Dibakar Banerjee, and Ashutosh Govariker. The only difference between them and earlier arthouse filmmakers is that in the case of the former lot, the main protagonist in a commercial film has to be a saleable star. For a film like Sarkar, Mr Bachchan's role could have been essayed by me or Naseeruddin Shah, but Mr Bachchan has a wider reach so he was chosen. Chak De! India, Mumbai Meri Jaan, Taare Zameen Par were all good films. I think the onus of producing good cinema lies in the hands of the Shah Rukh Khans, Aamir Khans and Akshay Kumars of Bollywood."

As talk veers to his turbulent marriage to Nandita, Puri candidly admits, "if after 15 years you are not compatible with your spouse, then it is better to live separately. I had compatibility issues withNandita earlier, but the only reason why I didn't think about splitting with her was because of my son. Nandita hurt me the most when she wrote my biography and divulged unneccesary details about my relationships and secrets just for publicity. I had shared a lot of information with her as a husband, they were not meant for public consumption. Nandita was very insensitive when she mentioned the names of the women I had been involved with. The book was meant to be an inspiring story on how I became an actor, but it got publicity for the wrong reasons."

Josh & I have become close: Bipasha

Almost every time a new pair works together, they get linked. When the pair is as hot as Bipasha Basuand Josh Hartnett, it is inevitable.

There has been a buzz that the Singularity co-stars are dating. The rumours sparked when Bips posted their pictures together on a social networking site. These pictures were leaked and splashed in tabloids. To be fair, their body language in the pictures did come across like that of a cosy couple, but we all know that pictures can lie, so we decided to ask Bips directly.

The actress, who is known to be fortright, has this to say when asked about Josh, "I have decided that I will keep things, that I share with people and the equations that I have with them, upto me. Josh and I have become close, but you know the moment I say something, it will be interpreted in a totally different way and then things generally get out of control. We share a great bond."

Should we read between the lines Bips? Are you seeing Josh? "I will not answer this. I don't want to walk down this road," she fires back. Hmmm.. what do we say now?
